1. Environmental and Greenhouse Requirements
- Structure: Requires a proper greenhouse, polytunnel, or net-house setup.
- Temperature: Needs daytime temperatures between 22°C and 28°C and nighttime temperatures around 15°C to 18°C.
- Humidity & Light: Optimum relative humidity is 60–70%, along with high sunlight exposure.
2. Soil, Media, and Nutrition
- Growing Medium: Because it is primarily a greenhouse crop, it is often grown in sterile cocopeat bags or well-drained, disease-free raised soil beds with rich organic matter.
- pH Range: The soil/medium pH should be maintained between 5.5 and 6.8.
- Fertilization: Requires a strict schedule of N-P-K and micronutrients. Because Volvo is a high-yielding hybrid, you typically need to implement a automated fertigation (drip irrigation combined with fertilizer) system.
3. Crop Management & Training
- Pruning: Because it is an indeterminate type, the plant will continuously grow and flower. You must prune it, typically to a single stem, by pinching off side shoots (suckers).
- Support System: Plants can grow well over 2 meters tall. They require sturdy trellising, where the main stem is clipped and tied to an overhead support wire.
- Pollination: Since greenhouses lack natural wind or insect pollinators, manual vibration of the plants (or introducing bumblebees) is necessary to ensure flower fertilization.
4. Seed & Water Requirements
- Seed Rate: Hybrid seeds are costly; you generally require about 150 to 200 grams per hectare.
- Water: Drip irrigation is essential. A mature plant will need roughly 2 to 3 liters of water per day.
